Valuben
was born in Kalrani Vandh. She attended a year of school, then worked in the family fields and tended the herds. At the
age of 16 she learned embroidery from her mother and began her dowry. She began embroidering professionally for Gurjari, and
then joined Kala Raksha. One of the founding members of the Tunda Vandh group, she began with labour intensive pieces for Ritu
Kumar. Valuben has participated in an Entrepreneurial Development program, a design workshop with Krishna Patel, and a
marketing workshop with Kala Raksha. Skilled at mud relief work, she has decorated the Kala Raksha Center and the Rabari
installation at the Sharad Utsav Festival in 2005. She has traveled to Delhi twice, and to Haridwar.
Valuben believes that Rabari embroidery will continue because Rabaris can’t be without it. She feels she must do at least a little
embroidery every day because it brings her peace of mind, and for the young it is a passion. “This is not hard work; it is our subject!
We have to work knowing that this is ours.”
