Ramesh belongs to a weavers’ family of Bhujodi. He studied up to 9th standard but could not continue after that because he fell from a neem tree and had severe head injuries. Ramesh learned weaving from his elder brother and his father, who was a leader in the Bhujodi weavers cooperative. He also learned from his uncle, who had won the President’s award for craftsmanship. Ramesh has participated in exhibitions organized at Delhi Haat, in Jaipur, Udaipur and Chandigadh. He has also attended workshops on packaging and marketing organized by government agencies.
In Ramesh’s view, a good artisan must be expert in all skills pertaining to his/her art. He must innovate within his tradition by correct placement of colour and good arrangement of motifs and design. “Although I and my family have been using our traditional motifs
like ‘Chomakh’ and ‘Dhumli’ for generations, I didn’t know much about it. I learned the history of our motifs after coming here.”
