Sohel is an educated urban youth who preferred to continue with his traditional craft, bandhani. Sohel lives in Bhuj city. He studied
up to B.Sc. (Chemistry) from Lalan science college, Bhuj. His father is an employee with the local court. But his mother practices the
bandhani skills she inherited from her family. Sohel began working with bandhani on a part time basis in 2002. Initially, he took care
of the marketing of their products in Rajasthan, Baroda, Mumbai, Anand etc. In 2005, after completing his studies, he took up
bandhani full time. He learned technical skills from his father and maternal uncle. Then he started experimenting with natural dyes
and creating patterns for bandhani.
Sohel feels that his biggest challenge is innovation in new colours, patterns and motifs based on existing traditions. In an attempt to
increase his knowledge about bandhani tradition and to know the latest trends in bandhani making, Sohel joined KRV. “Craft is like
bandhani. It evolves as you create it. I didn’t think of the design first, it came out. I saw that all of the elements were there in natural scenes, the same is true for our work. If you observe, it is all there. |
