Namoribhai belongs to a weavers’ family from Bhujodi. His grand father Tabhabhai was a well known craftsman who used to
sell his weaving in Sindh. His father shifted to Kandla during the great drought of 1956. In 1969, the family came back to Bhujodi
and resumed weaving. Namoribhai studied to 12th standard, and joined a diploma course in engineering at Adipur. However, he
was not able to complete the course. He had learned weaving from his family, and when he left his studies he entered the family
occupation fulltime. Namoribhai has had an interest in serving society since his youth. He established an NGO “Tarun Pragati
Mandal” and initiated a weavers’ cooperative in the name of ‘Dr. Baba Sahen Ambedkar’. In 1986,
Namoribhai visited Delhi for the first time for marketing. He has attended exhibitions in Udaipur and Bhopal and Mumbai as well.
Namoribhai feels that the increasing number of power looms is the biggest threat to hand weaving. The young generation is shifting
towards industries and elderly people are leaving weaving as well. Nonetheless, he feels that the future is brighter than before, and
the weavers are consciously trying to reverse previous mistakes. |
