Rajesh is the youngest son of a well known family of weavers in Bhujodi. The family has 48 weavers and 2 tailors working under
them. Rajesh’s father Vishramji Valji received the National award for crafts in 1974. His five brothers all weave. His second eldest
brother Hamirbhai won the National award in 1999, and his fourth brother Shyamjibhai won it in 2005. His brother Dinesh was
among the first graduates of KRV in 2006. Rajesh studied to 9th standard, and then began weaving full time in 2004. He has
participated in exhibitions and workshops in Delhi, Chennai, Pondicherry, Bangalore, and Mumbai, and has learned indigo dyeing in
Auroville. “My craft is very important to me, “Rajesh says. “It is our culture and heritage. Our present success is a result of hard
efforts by our forefathers.” According to Rajesh, old designs are good designs. He believes that a good artisan must have firm roots
in tradition. He should understand composition and colour, know how to work with natural dyes, understand the market and have
good presentation skills. Although weaving is facing severe threats of heavy industrialization in Kutch, Rajesh believes that the future
of the craft is good. The customer base is increasing and more and more people prefer hand made items. The increasing raw
material variety also leads to a wide range of products. He feels that the national award has increased the value of craft.
