Sarabai was born in Tankanasar, and she is engaged in Konatia. She has relatives everywhere, she says, up to Karachi. Her
father has 30 cows and earns a living selling milk. Her mother Fatmabai embroiders for Kala Raksha. Sarabai has three brothers,
and three sisters, all elder to her. Two of her brothers are married. The younger one married in nearby Kodki. But her other brother
didn’t want to marry locally so by choice he married a Bengali. There are 3 Bengali women married in Tankanasar. Sarabai went to
school until 4th grade, but did not finish. She didn’t understand Gujarati well and it was everywhere (the instructional medium). She
didn’t like the teacher, who was too strict and physically abused the children. And she also has a respiratory problem. After leaving
school, Sarabai learned embroidery. Her mother said she had to learn it if she left school. Though she fought with her mother at the
time, she learned embroidery on her own, from her sisters. She has been embroidering for a year. Mostly she does Kala Raksha
work, but she has also made a churi for herself. Sarabai says she doesn’t know what travel is. She has seen Bhuj, Gandhidham,
and Mundra (for a samu (mass) wedding). But she has not been outside Kutch. I have no dreams… but, I could be a designer and
work for Kala Raksha.
