Nitesh knows that a power loom can not produce a good design or do hand inserted motifs. Power loom products can be sold in the local market, he says, while hand woven products can be sold at better places.

Nitesh was interested in education, he was more interested in weaving. So he began to work with his father. He had learned much of the craft by observation from childhood, and the rest his father taught him. Nitesh thinks that weaving can be run with the joint efforts of the entire family. He and his father also employ six to eight weavers, and produce for exhibitions. Nitesh has attended exhibitions in Delhi, Chandigadh, Allahabad, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ajmer, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Varansi, Alwar and Agra. Nitesh sees a bright future for weaving. People need Food, Cloth and Shelter, he says, so weaving should continue forever. Further, weaving can be done at the artisan’s own schedule, and you can weave your entire life. “I will be sitting on the loom till the last breathe of my life…” he declares.

According to Nitesh, a good artisan should know everything about weaving, including dyeing and presenting work. He thinks that design should be traditional but there should be some modification for contemporary times. He also feels that there should be designs and prices for all social classes.

Today, hand weavers fear competition from power looms, due to the cheap cost of factory production.

But Nitesh knows that a power loom can not produce a good design or do hand inserted motifs. Power loom products can be sold in the local market, he says, while hand woven products can be sold at better places.

Nitesh’s father graduated from KRV last year. Nitesh now wants to learn about marketing and design. He also desires contacts through KRV. His dream is to go abroad and represent artisans from India. He also dreams to get a National award.
