Dhanjibhai's
family is from
Moghan. Seven generations ago, they came to Sarli
village. Dhanjibhai’s grandfather’s family consists of
350 people called the Govani Family. All are involved in
weaving. In the past, they wove for the Kanbi Patel
community in return for grains and money. One hundred
years ago, his grandfather wove a cloth which still in
the home of a Patel in the village. Today his family
consists of 11 members. Dhanjibhai’s father used to
weave handspun cotton fabric, but he left it to weave
acrylic and synthetic yarn for the outside market. In
1984 he was trained in colour at the Jaipur Weavers
Service Center, and afterwards he had one month’s
training in Sarli village. From then he started working
for markets outside of Kutch. He works for Gurjari,
Hathsaal Nigam and Geta Kendara.
Dhanjibhai has been weaving for
eleven years. He learned this art from his father. He
has participated in exhibitions in Delhi, Calcutta,
Banglore, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Dehradun,
Allahabad, Jodhpur, Lakhnow, etc. According to
Dhanjibhai, a good artisan works hard, has ambition,
craves for learning and puts it into practice. Good
design can be created by experiments and new
compositions with existing elements. He believes that if
they work as per the demand of customers, the future of
weaving is bright. Dhanjibhai longs to innovate in
weaving and create something different.
