Chandrikaben
is not sure about the future. Education has had an
impact on the tradition. Good embroidery should be
new, she feels, and it should show good technique. |

Chandrikaben's
parents migrated to
Gujarat from Sindh. She was born in Tharad, and the
family moved to Pragpur II when she was 15. Chandrikaben
is the eldest child, with 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Her
father makes shoes for Adani port as per order, and
works with Kanchan Moru's father.
Chandrikaben did not attend school. She learned
embroidery at the age of 10 from her mother. She
embroidered shoe strips for artisans in the village, and
when Sheila started a Kala Raksha group, began to work
with Kala Raksha. After marriage, Chandrikaben moved to
Sumrasar and through Kala Raksha she travelled to
Chennai and Delhi. With her family she has visited
Gangaji. For her dowry, Chandrikaben says, she made what
she liked. She used the soft
colours
that were then in fashion, but with contrast. "Today,"
she says, "embroidery is a way to earn, as well as a
remembrance. We don't do agriculture anymore; we
embroider." About the future, she is not sure. Education
has had an impact on the tradition. Good embroidery
should be new, she feels, and it should show good
technique. From the KRV course she expects to understand
more, to gain awareness.
