Kanchanben
is the second of
seven siblings: five sisters and one brother. The family
originally migrated from Sindh in 1972. Her father makes
shoes, which he sells in Bhuj. Kanchanben went to
seventh grade, the limit of the village. She liked
Gujarati and social sciences, she says, but not Math or
English. Kanchanben's mother, who was one of the
original Kala Raksha artisans in Sumrasar, taught her
embroidery three years ago. Kanchanben has embroidered
for Kala Raksha since then. She keeps whatever money she
earns.
Kanchanben believes that their traditional suf
embroidery will increase in the future. She joined the
course because she wants to become a designer.
