Taraben's
parents were born in Sindh
and migrated to Gujarat in 1972. Her mother grew up in
Tharad, and married in Faradi. Her father makes a living
polishing tiles. Tara is second eldest in a family of
two brothers and two sisters. Taraben did not like
school, and she left after 5th grade to do house work.
Her mother taught her embroidery, and she has been embroidering
for 5 years. She gives the money she earns to her
family.
A good
artisan knows more, Taraben says. She has to know
traditional concepts.
She believes that suf tradition will continue if
artisans think of the value of their efforts. Taraben
learned about KRV from her cousin Tulsiben, who
completed the course last year. Her expectation of
design education is that it will enable artisans to do
their own work.
