"To become a good artisan," Shafik says,
"one has to have a desire and focus on design, colour and craftsmanship." |
|
Shafik's
family originally came from Kundrodi village, but for the last 7 generations they have lived
in Mundra. Shafik's great grandfather, grandfather and father all sold materials: dyes and fabric.
Bandhani was revived for the family by Shafik. He was interested in colour, and learned from Tanveer's
father Ibrahimbhai, and has practiced for ten years. Today, Shafik works with over 25 artisans, creating
products for
local markets: Bhuj, Anjar, Gandhidham, Mundra, and Jamnagar. Shafik has never gone to
an exhibition outside, but he has been to Mumbai, Bangalaore and Jamnagar.
"To become a good artisan," Shafik says, "one has to have a desire and focus on
design, colour and craftsmanship. Good designs need proper colour proportion, composition. A good design
is one that most people like."
