Abdul Aziz
A member of the Khatri community of Bhadli, Abdul Aziz learned the art of woollen bandhani from his family. His mother
won the President’s National Award for craftsmanship in 1993-- the first artist to receive the award for bandhani work on wool.
Abdul Aziz learned traditional patterns from his uncle, and dyeing techniques from his father. He received a scholarship from the All
India Handicrafts Board in 1998 to study natural dyeing in Dhamadka. On his own initiative, in 2003 he also undertook training at
ATIRA (Ahmedabad Textile Industries Research Association), where he learned about water treatment, water conservation,
environmental concerns and applications for all types of dyes.
Aziz’s proficiency with dyes is in great demand among weavers, NGOs and companies. In addition he produces bandhani for
national and international markets. “My experience at KRV has given me the skill of keen observation, and confidence. I have the
advantage of being both an artisan and a designer. I can do what others cannot!” |
