Hiruben
was born in Nundalal village, and came to Vandh after marriage. In her childhood there was not much priority on
education. The preferred choice was to learn embroidery, which she did Hiruben has worked with Kala Raksha since its inception.
In addition to embroidering, she has attained basic literacy through education classes. She is a member of the Wages Committee.
Also in the Design Committee, she has attended design workshops taught by Nita Thakore, Krishna Patel, Laurance, Sangita Shroff,
and the Creative Thread Trust (France). Hiruben has also attended Kala Raksha sales in Delhi and Chennai, from which she has
gained some understanding of market taste.
A good artisan is one who knows the traditions and can do new work too, Hiruben says. Technique is important, but pattern and
colour are equally essential. You know an artisan by what she wears. Embroidery will continue, she believes, but in new ways. It
always adjusts to the times.
