Abdul was born and brought up in Bhuj city. He belongs to the Khatri community which is famous for its craftsmanship and enterprising spirit. Abdul Vahab’s father is a businessman who has a shop in Bhuj. However, Vahab and his brother are engaged with traditional Bandhani (tie and dye) art. His brother learned the art from their brother-in-law and established their bandhani unit in Bhuj. Later on, Vahab joined him
Even though he didn’t inherit his art from his father, Vahab feels that his art is his identity. He says, “I am highly satisfied by the
opportunity to create new designs on my own. This is my identity now.” Vahab believes that the market is the key to survival of the
art, and that the market understands Kutchi tradition.
