Mukesh's
family were weavers in
Mudan, two hundred years ago. They shifted to
Jingutimbho, three kilometers from Sarli, and continued
their profession, travelling between villages to sell
their cotton goods to local people. Mukesh’s Grandfather
Samathbhai won the state award. in 1990. His father
Naranbhai won the Sant Khabir award in 2009, and his
uncle Kanthibhai won the National award in 1997.
Mukesh learned the craft from his
father during his school days and has been weaving for
the last 7 years. Mukesh has travelled to Hyderabad, Goa,
Lucknow, Varanasi, Udaipur, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Mumbai,
Delhi and Ahmedabad. He thinks that for good design one
should have good thoughts and who ever can make a good
design is a good designer . A good artisan is someone
who puts a lot of effort in his work and who can do
proper composition and can play with colour. All
households require woven material in some form, Mukesh
says. So, progress depends a lot on weaving. The future
is good for weaving, he feels. Market demand has
increased. But with industries coming into the area the
number of artisans and helpers has dwindled and there is
a little concern for the future.
Mukesh wants to do a lot of work in
the field of weaving and popularize the craft, as well
as start his own brand and travel abroad. |
