Tanveer
belongs to a traditional
bandhani artisan family from Mundra. His father’s family has
been doing bandhani for the last 100 years. His
grandfather was the first to set up an avat dyes
workshop in Mundra, after being trained in Germany. Tanveer’s mother’s family originally
lived in Mundra but relocated to Bhuj as her father was an
accountant. She knew the art of tying for bandhani before
marriage. Tanveer’s parents shifted to Mumbai for 13 years,
and did not practice bandhani there, but took it up again on
return to Mundra. Tanveer is the eldest of three
children. His two younger sisters are being educated in
Mundra.
While living in Mumbai, Tanveer attended
formal School till 7th Grade. At that time he had two
brain tumor operations, and had to stop his
formal education. For the last six years he has taken up
the family craft of bandhani. Today he is also
attempting to get a formal education certification
through IGNOU. Tanveer does not think the future of the
craft is good, as a lot of new entrants have usurped
bandhani and are selling cheap, poor quality work
in the name of Kutch Bandhani. He feels that attending
KRV will teach him to find inspiration and innovation.
